St Marys Church Chilham

Description

St Mary's Church in Chilham has a history that stretches back over 1,300 years. A place of worship has existed on this site since at least the 7th century, a fact reinforced by its mention in the Domesday Book of 1086. Over the centuries, control of the church shifted from a French abbey to Syon Abbey, and the structure itself evolved. The 14th century saw the addition of transepts, followed by a significant rebuilding of the nave in the 15th century and the construction of the prominent 68-foot-high west tower around 1534, which is a defining feature of the village square. The church holds a unique place in English ecclesiastical history due to its connection to St Augustine. After the dissolution of the monasteries, the revered shrine of St Augustine was secretly moved to St Mary's for safekeeping. However, the shrine mysteriously vanished from the church in 1541, and its whereabouts remain one of Kent's enduring historical mysteries. This historical intrigue is matched by the church's impressive interior, which is famous for its collection of fine monuments dedicated to local gentry, particularly the Digges family of Chilham Castle. Today, St Mary's stands as a beautiful and active parish church, preserving centuries of architectural and social history. The church underwent significant restoration in 1863, which rebuilt the chancel and aisles, but much of its medieval character and historical artifacts remain intact. Its picturesque location next to Chilham Castle makes it a central landmark in the village, welcoming visitors to appreciate its deep history, stunning architecture, and unique memorials, such as the famous monument to Mary Kemp, Lady Digges.
